Beat them with a crutch

Metaphors, parables, analogies… anthropomorphism… Star Wars. I stumbled across this story via the inanity of Digg:

‘A UK man has confessed to dressing up like Darth Vader and attacking two men who founded a church based on Jedi teachings. He beat them with a crutch, but to be fair, they were asking for it: The victims had been playing with light sabers and filming themselves while doing so.

Hughes admitted two charges of common assault.

The court heard he has a “chronic alcohol problem” and had drunk the best part of a 10 litre box of wine.

Mrs Lloyd said: “He was wearing a black bin bag and a cape and had a metal crutch in his hand.” Mrs Lloyd said he was shouting “Darth Vader”

I’ve spent the best part of 15 minutes trying to figure how I could justify posting this humorous item to the blog and the best I could manage was this:

If Darth is big media, AOL & Co. then the Stormtroopers are the new upstart media, the Digg’s and Twitter Twatters. Poor ole Darth needs more hooch than normal to go on the rampage armed only with his disability allowance.

It doesn’t take a decade to disrupt a business model anymore, not in a media sense, it can take a matter of months, see You Tube’s 18 month rise from no one to everyone and those incumbent media megaliths that go on the attack will fail, they’d be better going along to the Star Wars church and helping the storm troopers brew their own.

It’s a tenuous analogy at best, but it’s a theme I’ll be returning to as we begin work on our own stealth start-up intended to disrupt just about everything we’ve come to loathe about the web and seek to restore respect in everything we love about it.
